Author: Manuel Mielke

Manuel Mielke discovered his passion for radio receivers while sitting in a Vodafone drive test van for several months, running network scans with scanners from Rohde & Schwarz. This was during his studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Regensburg, Germany. Today – an electrical engineering degree with a major in wireless communications and a stint at antenna specialist Kathrein later – Manuel finds himself “driving” the R&S scanners: as Product Manager Drive Test Scanners, he defines and shapes their specifications to help customers introduce new radio network technologies and features quickly and efficiently.

Electromagnetic field measurements in 5G: Overview and concepts (part 1)

What is different about 5G NR from a technology perspective? In layer 1, it is the heavy use of beamforming and frequencies above 3 GHz. Beamforming is used to overcome the increased path loss, especially at 3 GHz and above. However, beamforming and frequencies above 3 GHz have raised a large number of discussions among the population, especially about electromagnetic…

NB-IoT: Scanners are a must for coverage measurements (part 2)

In part 1 of our series about NB-IoT, an “Overview of Internet of Things technologies with a focus on NB-IoT”, we described typical use cases and current technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT). We also identified that networks for IoT applications would be optimized for the highest availability, particularly concerning IoT applications under extreme receive conditions such as smart…
